What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional Therapy is a specialized form of therapy that focuses on improving the function, strength, and coordination of the muscles of the face, mouth, tongue, and airway. These muscles play a crucial role in essential daily functions such as breathing, chewing, swallowing, speaking, sleeping, and overall facial development.

Many children and adults develop improper oral habits or muscle patterns over time, often without realizing it. Common issues may include:

  • Mouth breathing

  • Low tongue posture

  • Speech related concerns

  • Digestive issues

  • Tongue thrust

  • Clenching / grinding

  • Snoring

  • Sleep apnea / sleep disordered breathing

  • Lip and / or tongue tie

  • Migraine headaches

  • Anxiety and / or depression

  • TMJ dysfunction

  • Thumb / object sucking

  • ADHD like symptoms

  • Enlarged tonsils / adenoids

  • Orthodontic relapse

  • Bed wetting

  • Swallowing difficulty

  • Dental cavities

Left unaddressed, these patterns can contribute to concerns involving sleep quality, jaw development, dental alignment, airway health, and overall wellness.
